BOARD OF TRUSTEES

January 2009

Whereas the Board of Trustees of Ohio Wesleyan University in May 2008 called for a thorough review of Greek life at OWU, and 

Whereas the Greek Life Study Group was formed in August 2008 and has worked diligently through the fall semester, and 

Whereas the Greek Life Study Group, chaired by Dr. Craig Ullom, presented its initial report, in conjunction with the Residence Life Task Force, including an outline for facility renovation and programmatic enhancements,  now therefore, 

Be it resolved that the Board of Trustees of Ohio Wesleyan University endorses the conceptual recommendations of the Greek Life Study Group and looks forward to receiving, at its May meeting, a specific and detailed plan, including architectural specifications and a financial plan, for renovation of the Greek Houses, and 

Be it further resolved that the Board of Trustees authorizes the administration to spend up to $150,000 for architectural, engineering and any other services required to continue this planning in preparation for the presentation in May 2009.

 GREEK LIFE STUDY GROUP RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR A GREEK HOUSING MASTER PLAN

a. The Greek Life Study group supports the concepts included in the Greek Housing Master Plan dated November 20, 2008 and recommends continued consideration of this plan by the Ohio Wesleyan University Board of Trustees.

b. Opportunities will be provided to active fraternity and sorority members, alumni, and house corporation stakeholders to comment on the plan.

c. The specifics regarding implementation of this plan will be developed as part of the comprehensive residential life master plan that is being designed by the Task Force on Residential Life.

d. The recommendation will be considered by the appropriate University strategic planning committees for inclusion in the University's comprehensive strategic plan.

A RESOLUTION
TO ENDORSE AND SUPPORT A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF GREEK LIFE
AT OHIO WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY BY THE OHIO WESLEYAN BOARD OF TRUSTEES

WHEREAS, the current situation with Greek Life (Fraternity and Sorority) across the country and at Ohio Wesleyan University, in particular, indicates that we are clearly in a time of change and a time of challenge—a time of change and challenge which offers us the opportunity to do a careful assessment and study, as well as to prepare ourselves for a stronger future,

WHEREAS, Ohio Wesleyan University is committed to a Greek Life system that is of the highest quality and to a Greek program that offers significant, positive experiences for our students as they live, study, learn, grow, and develop during their time on the Ohio Wesleyan campus,

WHEREAS, improvements in various aspects of Greek Life at Ohio Wesleyan University are needed,

WHEREAS, it is our hope and our goal that the rich tradition of a strong and vibrant Greek Life on the Ohio Wesleyan University campus will continue well into the future,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE OHIO WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES:

1. That the Ohio Wesleyan University Board of Trustees Endorses and Supports a Comprehensive Study of Greek Life at Ohio Wesleyan University as proposed by Interim President David O. Robbins and the Administration of the University.
2. That the Greek Life Study Group be broadly representative, including membership from the following groups: Current Students; Alumni, including the Alumni Association Board of Directors; Parents; Faculty; Administration; and the University’s Board of Trustees.
3. The charge for the Greek Life Study Group at Ohio Wesleyan University, as proposed by the Administration, is to create a road map for excellence within the Greek Life system at Ohio Wesleyan University. The areas to explore for positive change include, but are not limited to the following: recruitment of new members; member education; character and leadership development; scholarship; risk management and accountability; fraternity and sorority facilities, including housing facilities; campus community relations; alumni relations and support; national fraternity and sorority relations and support; University staffing and support; the role of governing and coordinating bodies (e.g., Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, OWU Alumnae Panhellenic Council, OWU Alumni Interfraternity Council, and National Pan-Hellenic Council). The Study Group will seek ways to encourage within the Greek organizations, individually and collectively, the appreciation of fraternity or sorority history and ritual. One end product of this Study will be a clear statement of the relationship between the University, the fraternity and sorority organizations, and the respective alumni groups which are associated with each fraternity and sorority.
