Information for Parents
Welcome parents! The Ohio Wesleyan Greek community is pleased to have your son or daughter (or both) on campus! We would like to thank you in advance for your interest in Greek Life.
This page is designed to provide you with information about our Greek community, its policies and initiatives. If you should have concerns, please do not hesitate to contact dklamp@owu.edu.
What are Fraternities and Sororities?
- Fraternities and sororities are value-based organizations
- They are dedicated to the development of character and leadership
- Greek organizations join students who share similar interests and ideals
- Greek life provides a unique balance of leadership, social interactions, community service and philanthropy, and networking opportunities
- Membership helps students make the most of their college experience
Greek Housing
- Fraternity members will move to their chosen fraternity's house after joining. Typically, this move will occur the semester after the student first joins. For instance, a student that joins in the fall may move in for the spring semester.
- Sorority members continue to live in residence halls or small living units (SLUs).
- Sorority houses are located on West Winter Street, one block North of the residential side of campus. The groups use these houses for meetings and events, but do not live in them.
- As with traditional campus housing, exceptions to this policies (such as living off-campus) must be approved by the Residential Life Office. Students may enter a lottery for off-campus housing in January. Fraternity members must obtain permission from their House Corporation to enter the lottery. Entering the lottery does not guarantee that a student will be granted permission to live off-campus. For more information on the lottery, please visit the Residential Life website.
Meal Plans
- Fraternity members will shift to the fraternity meal plan upon joining a chapter. A cook or chef prepares meals for the residents of each house. Select fraternities also maintain some food points to be used at OWU dining locations.
- After a man joins a fraternity, his room and board charges transfer to the fraternity. There is a slight increase in the charge for board.
- Sorority members continue on the traditional food plans. For more information on these, please see the Dining Services website.
Finances
- When a man joins a fraternity, his room and board transfer to the organization. There is a slight increase in the cost for board (approximately $200). The charges are still billed to his OWU account.
- Fraternity members are also charged dues, which vary based on the chapter. These charges cover brotherhood, philanthropic, operational & social expenses.
- Sorority members are charged dues, which vary based on the chapter. These charges cover house-related expenses (utilities, repairs, etc.), sisterhood, philanthropic, operational & social expenses.
Academics
- Greeks recognize that academic achievement is the basis for future success
- A minimum GPA is required to join a Greek organization, and to maintain good standing within the organization
- The all-Greek GPA is consistently above the all-campus GPA
- Each Greek chapter develops academic programming
- The Greek governing bodies recognize outstanding individual and chapter scholarship each semester
The New Member Period & Hazing
- During the New Member Period, new members learn more about the organizations, traditions, and the active members
- At the conclusion of this process, new members are initiated and become active members
- Ohio Wesleyan and the Greek community oppose hazing in any form
- Hazing is any act that forces an individual into an embarrassing or humiliating situation in which the individual would not normally participate
- Hazing is counterproductive to the mission of Greek Life: to build well-rounded individuals
- The 2006-2007 Ohio Wesleyan University Hazing Policy can be viewed here (492k PDF*).
Community Service & Philanthropy
- Each chapter holds annual fundraisers and service events
- Greek organizations serve the local community and special philanthropies
- Service projects include tutoring at local elementary schools, blood drives, Adopt-a-Highway cleanups, clothing and food drives, and a campus-wide cleanup
- Chapter philanthropies include St. Jude, Reading is FUNdamental, the American Cancer Society, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Canine Companions for Independence and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)
Leadership
- Students can take major leadership roles within their chapters and the larger Greek community
- Leaders develop skills for self-governance, responsibility, and communication
- Greeks are regularly involved as leaders in other campus organizations
- National and regional leadership conferences and officer training programs are offered annually
